The Majority Cannot Inflict Upon The Rights Of The Minority
What does that mean? It means the minority, no matter how small can retain there rights against the majority, unless doing so would inflict on another's rights. Imagine if in Mississipi after the slaves were freed the people got to vote an African-Americans' rights? They would surely vote them away, now imagine Prop 8, gays were just given the right to marry, but then it went to a vote, where the majority rules, and they lost their rights.
First ask anybody if civil rights should be granted, they will most likely say yes, now ask them if gay rights are civil rights, the answer is most likely yes, now put the two together.
